Before the block,
there was a cat.
Every world has an origin story. This one starts in Sweden, in a living room, with a man who was building a game and a cat who was ignoring him.

Who is Jeb
Jens "Jeb" Bergensten is a Swedish game developer and one of the most important figures in Minecraft's history.
He joined Mojang during Minecraft's early development, worked alongside creator Markus "Notch" Persson, and became Minecraft's lead designer as Notch stepped back from development.
He later became Chief Creative Officer at Mojang Studios and played a major role in Minecraft's creative direction.

And who is Newton
Newton was Jeb's real-life pet cat. When cats were being developed for Minecraft, Newton's black-and-white tuxedo appearance became the real-life model for the game's tuxedo cat.
She was not a mascot. She was not a marketing decision. She was a cat who slept on a rug in Sweden while a game quietly took over the world — and then walked straight into it.

MEET NEWTON
2004 — 2014
She was a house cat with a physicist's name and absolutely no interest in physics. She sat on laptops. She lost fights with a plush flamingo. She was, by every available account, extremely normal.
And then one day the man whose lap she was occupying needed to know what a cat looked like — the shape of the head, where the white starts, how the tail ends in a pale tip. He looked down.
That's the whole secret. There was no design brief. Minecraft's cat looks like Newton because Newton was there.

2011
The internet meets her.
16 October 2011. Jeb posts a photo of the cat asleep on him: "Sitting awkwardly with lapcat :) Her name is Newton." Fifty people like it. Nobody knows what they're looking at.
2012
The cat becomes a mob.
Cats arrive in Minecraft. Black body, white chest, white paws, pale tail tip. Newton becomes part of the story behind Minecraft's cat — and millions of players start taming a copy of her.
2014
The world says goodbye.
21 May 2014. Within days, players are building memorials and shrines to a cat they never met, in worlds she was already living in.
TODAY
Her legacy lives inside Minecraft.
Every tuxedo cat that follows a player home carries a little of her. Newton is the rarest kind of legend: the accidental kind.
